Nigeria President Umaru Yar'Adua 'has heart problem'

Nigeria President Umaru Yar'Adua 'has heart problem'

The president has had a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years
Nigerian President Umaru Yar'Adua has a heart condition, his spokesman has said, after he flew to Saudi Arabia on Monday for medical treatment.
Mr Yar'Adua has acute pericarditis, or inflammation of the lining around the heart, his spokesman told the BBC.
He said the president, 58, was responding well to treatment. Officials earlier denied rumours that the president was seriously ill.
Mr Yar'Adua has had a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years.
He has been unable to perform a number of official duties because of recurring health problems.
At about 3pm Friday November 20, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed Muslim prayer, President Yar'Adua complained of a left-sided severe chest pain

President Yar'Adua has twice been flown to Germany for emergency treatment and it is the second time he has visited hospitals in Saudi Arabia.
He has refused to say exactly what condition he suffers from, and has repeatedly said in interviews that his life is "in the hands of God".
BBC health reporter Michelle Roberts says most cases of pericarditis clear up with rest and medication within a few weeks, although patients will initially need to be treated in hospital to check for complications.
Our reporter says occasionally pericarditis is triggered by cancer, which is something doctors need to check for.
Rarely patients may need surgery if the pressure around the heart becomes too great, a complication that could potentially be fatal, she adds.
UMARU YAR'ADUA
Born in 1951 in the northern Muslim state of Katsina
Self-confessed Marxist as an undergraduate
Became a chemistry teacher after university
Married twice, has nine children
Governor of Katsina from 1999 to 2007
During his governorship Katsina adopted Sharia law
Nickname since becoming president in 2007 - "Baba-go-slow"
High point of his presidency so far - the amnesty for oil militants
Has suffered from a chronic kidney condition for at least 10 years

Presidential spokesman Olusegun Adeniyi said the president felt pains after performing Friday prayers last week.
"At about 3pm Friday November 20, after he returned from the Abuja Central Mosque where he performed Muslim prayer, President Yar'Adua complained of a left-sided severe chest pain," he said, reports Reuters.
Mr Adeniyi said the initial diagnosis was pericarditis, which has since been confirmed.
Officials had earlier been quoted as saying the president intended to make the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca this week.
Analysts say his continued ill-health poses a problem for Nigeria's constitution.
If he were to step down or die, he would be replaced by Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan, who is from the country's southern Niger Delta region.
But according to the ruling People's Democratic Party's own formula for sharing power among the country's regions, the president must be a northerner.

Nigerian Team Racks Up Points at Youth World Cup

By Brent Latham Kano, Nigeria30 October 2009

Nigeria's national youth football (soccer) team has represented the host nation well thus far in the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, with two good performances to start the tournament.

With a win over Honduras in its second match of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, Nigeria's young footballers have virtually assured their spot in the elimination rounds of this year's youth World Cup, being played across Nigeria. The Golden Eaglets, as the team comprised of players seventeen and younger is known here, edged the Central Americans, 1-0, on a second half goal by Abdul Ajagun. While the team has players with great individual skill, Nigerian Coach John Obuh said they also play well as a unit. "We did play together. You can have individual players that can play together. We still have those, but I think we played together in the second half," he said,xz

In the victory, Nigeria put in a strong second-half performance for the second straight match. In their opening game, the Golden Eaglets fell behind by three to European champions Germany, only to rally back with three second half goals to salvage a vital tie. Nigeria is now likely to advance out of a very difficult group that, aside from Germany and Honduras, also includes perennial football power Argentina.

The hosts face the Argentinians, who have won both of their matches so far, Saturday night in Bauchi, in a game that will decide which team wins the group. The Nigerians may not be anxious to move on from Abuja, where large crowds have gotten behind them at the national stadium. Over 42 thousand spectators were on hand for the match with Honduras. The Honduran coach, Eugenio Umanzor, said the boisterous partisan crowd was a factor in the game, but that the play on the field was the key.

The coach said his players had seldom experienced an environment like the one they faced in Abuja. He added that the Nigerian side looked ready to defend the title they won in the previous edition of the tournament, played in 2007 in South Korea. The Under-17 World Cup is played once every two years. This year's champion will be crowned on November 15th at the National Stadium in Abuja.

Reps move against corporate prostitution in banks

By Luka Binniyat

ABUJA—The House of Representatives yesterday passed into Second Reading a bill that prohibits the use of Nigerian women by banks in manners that makes them compromise to meet set targets and keep their jobs.

The bill, however, went through a heated debate before it was passed through a voice count that marginally defeated opponents of the bill.

The bill, tagged: A Bill for an Act to Prohibit Corporate Prostitution and Exploitation of Women in Corporate Organisation and Other Matters Connected therein, was sponsored by Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Leading the debate, Gbajabiamila said that in the quest for making huge profits, Nigerian banks put their female employees in difficult conditions that push some of them to engage in corporate prostitution, if they must meet their targets.

“We have seen where a female bank employee was given a job in January and by September was expected to meet a target of N500 million,” he said.

“It is no longer news that these women are seen everyday parading the corridors of offices knocking on doors, and once let in, some would begin to weep, begging for help to meet their target or they will get sacked,” he said

He said that many marriages and relationship have been broken as a result of this practice.

Libya halts execution of Nigerians on death row

Libya halts execution of Nigerians on death row

By Davidson Iriekpen, 10.01.2009
Thursday, October 1, 2009

Temporary relief has come the way of Nigerians on death row in Libya as the country's authorities have agreed to stop their execution. The suspension was made  pending the final determination of a case brought by Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), before the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, in Banjul, The Gambia.
THISDAY gathered the decision by Libya followed a Provisional Measure issued by the African Commission which ordered the country to halt the execution.
The North African country's adherence to the measure was made known in a paper titled Debating the Death Penalty: Experiences from Different Regions, dated September 25, 2009 and presented by a member of the African Commission, Ms Catherine Modupe Atoki, at the International Peace Institute in New York last week.
“Early September this year, a communication was filed with the African Commission against Libya by a Nigerian Non-Governmental Organi-zation, Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP). It alleged that over 200 Nigerians are on death row for offences ranging from immigration, murder, drug and armed robbery.

"The Commission requested from the President of Libya a provisional measure to stay execution pending the determination of the communication. Happily, the President obliged and for now there is a hold on the execution of the convicted persons," said Atoki who delivered the paper.
It was gathered that one of the prisoners, Miss Juliet Okoro, reportedly claimed that the accusation of murder for which she has been placed on death row since 2000 was forged. Her indictment, she further claimed, followed no legal representation.
However, Okoro confirmed that the Libyan President, Muammar Gaddafi had granted amnesty to the convicts who are waiting for the Nigerian embassy in Libya to sign some documents for their deportation.
SERAP’s lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, welcomed the news of suspension but challenged the Nigerian government to be more responsive to its citizens abroad.

“It is now time for the Nigerian government to show responsibility by immediately ensuring the safety and well-being of the Nigerians on death row in Libya, and facilitating their safe return back home. The continuing silence and inaction of the Nigerian government on this matter is a failure of leadership and simply unacceptable,” Falana said.

The feisty lawyer asked President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua to rise up to the occasion in defending the rights of Nigerians across the world. According to him, the Libya case is proof that the rights of Nigerians outside the country could be protected when and if their government takes action.
It is important for the government do discharge its "Constitutional and International responsibility," towards Nigerians he added. Falana commended the Chairman of the House Committee on Diaspora, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and SERAP for fighting for the rights of the condemned persons.
SERAP had through its solicitor, Falana, filed a case before the African Commission on September 6 2009, on behalf of the prisoners.
He alleged "serious, persistent and irreparable violations of the Complainants’ rights to life; to communicate with their embassy or consular post; to competent and effective legal representation; to trial within a reasonable time or to a release; to trial by a competent, independent and impartial tribunal established by law; to the presumption of innocence; to an interpreter and to translation; to appeal to an independent and impartial tribunal, and fair trial guarantees during appeals.”
The Commission in the Provisional Measures with reference number ACHPR/ PROVM/LIB/01/75, dated September  9, 2009, and signed by Acting Chairperson of the Commission, Bahame Tom Mukirya NYANDUGA, expressed concern about Nigerians on death row and those held under "inhuman and degrading treatment," in Libya.
The Provisional Measures reads in part: “The Complaint has been registered as a Communication against Libya. I would also like to inform you that the Communication shall be tabled before the African Commission, for seizure during its next Ordinary Session, which is scheduled to take place from 11-25 November 2009, and will subsequently be sent to the authorities.”

The Commission also said: “In accordance with Rule 111(3) of the Rules of Procedure of the African Commission, I urge you to intervene in the matter with the view of preventing irreparable damage being caused to the victims while the African Commission inquires about the veracity of the Complaint. The appeal is particularly pertinent in respect of the imprisoned Nigerians, whom the Complainant alleges that they await the death penalty.”

The African Commission is the body charged with overseeing compliance with legal obligations under the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights

NIGERIANS TO BOYCOTT SONY IF.....

Nigeria opposition seeks boycott of Sony products over advert

News - Africa news
Lagos, Nigeria - Expressing anger at what it called the rising spate of Nigeria bashing around the world, the country's opposition Action Congress (AC) party Sunday called for a boycott of Sony products to show their displeasure against the Japanese firm's derogatory advert on Nigeria.

In a statement issued in Lagos and obtained by PANA here Sunday, the party said boycotting Sony products would ''send a strong signal to other companies out there that may be inclined to copy Sony''.

AC said the offensive part of the advert, on Sony's popular Play Station 3 Console, which says ''You can't believe everything you read on the internet, otherwise I will be a Nigerian millionnaire by now'', was aimed at sho wing that Nigerians are not capable of conducting a decent business.''
``Yet, Sony, which is behind this advert, has been doing good business in Nigeria for decades. We are appalled at the companyâ?s audacity, and we believe that its belated and half-hearted apology has not diminished the damage done to our people by the advert. Even if the advert has been pulled, the version posted on various sites around the world, including youtube, continue to run,'' the party said.

Following complaints by Nigeria's Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Sony has applogised over the advert, in addition to withdrawing it from circulation.

In a related development, AC has also joined the growing list of individuals and organisations complaining about a sci-fi movie, District Nine, which the government said portrays Nigerians as cannibals, criminals and prostitutes.

The movie was set in South Africa and produced by a South African, a situation that prompted the AC to say it was shocked that a fellow African nation could make itself available as a platform to attack Nigeria.
``The fact that the movie 'District Nine'...was set in South Africa and produced by a South African is a great shock to us, considering the long-standing good r e lations between our two countries, and Nigeria's sacrifice in helping to liberate the co untry from the throes of apartheid,'' it said.

But the party blamed the disrespect being shown to Nigeria on its government, saying: ``It does not matter how good the ordinary Nigerian is, the world cannot r e spect a country that cannot freely and fairly elect its leaders, a country where votes are stolen with impunity and unelected leaders are holding sway.''

A LOOK AT NIGERIA

When I look back at Nigeria,
I see a failed nation,
a colossal mistake of the colonial masters,
combination of deadly coils called unity
time bomb waiting to explode

When I look back at Nigeria
I see a dehumanized people
Scavengers struggling to survive
Feeding on unavailable carrions
A nation of anything goes.

CBN to issue N5, N10, and N50 notes in polymer substrate

By AMECHI OGBONNA, TITUS NWOKOJI and BLAISE UNDUNZE Thursday, September 17, 2009
In continuation of the currency reforms initiated by Professor Chukwuma Soludo, the immediate past governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the apex bank has said it will on September 30, 2009 issue a total of 1.915 billion notes in N5, N10 and N50 denominations using polymer substrate format.

Mallam Sanusi Lamido

The new notes which will be launched by President Umaru Yar’Adua, is to replace the existing paper mode in the affected denominations.
Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mallam Sanusi Lamido, who briefed the press in Lagos on Wednesday said the extension of polymer substrate was due to the cost effectiveness of the base material and its long lasting nature.
He stated that polymer notes are known to last longer in circulation and was 1.8 times the cost of the paper notes but last 4 times longer than the paper notes. It does not tear easily, nor get soiled easily. According to him, the N20 note on polymer was a test case to determine the advantages and demerits of polymer substrate and its acceptance; and the lower denominations are being reprinted because of their frequency of use by Nigerians.
Of the total amount being introduced, The Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc will only handle 615 million notes while a foreign printing company will complement with 1.3 billion notes.
He explained that the reason the NSPMC was handling only 615 million was because it is still saddled with the responsibility of printing other higher denominations of the naira and has reached its capacity due to the large volume involved.
He enumerated the elements of the currency reform to include reduction in the size of the notes to make them fit properly into a wallet in addition to streamlining of security features for cost effectiveness.
The notes have special features to assist the blind in recognizing the various denominations. They have no naira sign on them while the values are expressed in Igbo, Hausa and Yoruba for easy recognition by most Nigerians, and reflect modern designs in currency production.
Sanusi noted further that the objectives of the reform includes making the notes secure and keep ahead of counterfeiters, enhance the durability of banknotes, thereby sustaining Central Bank’s clean notes policy.
“Since polymer notes last longer in circulation, it implies that the frequency of processing/sorting and replacing unfit/dirty notes will be reduced, translating into cot-savings. The reduction in cost will free resources that could be diverted to other uses.
“ Besides, the long-term cost advantage of polymer is backward integration as the material can be made from petrochemical products which exist in Nigeria” the governor stated.
The new notes, according to him have retained their current sizes, designs and other key elements. Only the watermark has been replaced with the transparent window and G-switch which turns from green to gold when the note is tilted which are essential features present in N20 note.
Responding to questions journalists, Mr. Ben Onyido, director of currency and branch operations Central Bank of Nigeria said that 1.3 billion notes was given to a foreign printer was through a competitive bid process. He recalled that in 2008, no currency was imported from overseas but in this case, the NSPM has reached its capacity for the year

Son to Nigeria’s newly appointed Ambassador to US accused of rape

Sep 19, 2009
We are Embarrassed — Senators

By Victor Omoregie & Emma AzikenAdedamola son of Nigeria Ambassador-designate to the US Professor Tunde Adediran was charged with rape in the US. It happened in Maryland, and he is now charged with gang_raping three women in the city of Baltimore, according to ABC_2 News, a local Baltimore television station. However Prof. Adeniran in Nigeria confirmed that Adedamola is his son but feigned ignorance of the rape charges.Maryland police say on July 27th, two women accepted a ride from two men near North Calvert and West Fayette streets in Downtown Baltimore. But instead of driving them home, police say the men got on I_95 south, threatened the women with a knife, and drove them to the parking lot of Seton Keough High School in Southwest Baltimore. There, police say the women were both raped by the two men and a third man who arrived later.

Professor Tunde Adeniran and son Adedamola
Three men were charged in the case, 19_year_old Adedamola Adeniran of Halethorpe, along with 19_year_old Anthony Edoror and 20_year_old Opeyemi Adigun, who both live near Woodlawn.
On August 18, an identical attack took place, but the victim was able to identify the licence plate of the car to the police, thereby leading the police to one of the suspects. She identified the other two men.

Apart from the rape charges against his son, Nigeria’s ambassador_in_waiting, who was appointed over five months ago, faces potential hurdles to his clearance to assume his exalted position in Washington DC. State Department officials said that Professor Adeniran has two wives in the US bearing his name, which effectively makes him a polygamist. They said it is a grey area that needed to be sorted out before he can be finally cleared.
In addition to rape, Adedamola and the other two men also face charges that include false imprisonment and conspiracy to commit rape. If convicted, they could spend the rest of their lives in prison.

We are Embarrassed — Senators
This rejection arose from criminal proceedings being instituted against his son who has been charge along side other fellow Nigerians for statutory rape in the US. In the US, public office holders are liable to infraction by their families. So it is expected that anybody, even representatives of foreign countries and members of their families, should be above board morally, financially and other wise.
What remains now is the reaction of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to this diplomatic move.
Embarrassed Senators of the Foreign Affairs Committee have said they would not have cleared Professor Tunde Adeniran as Ambassador nominee to the United States of America if they knew his son was facing rape charges in America.
Their reaction was part of the storm of protests from leading politicians, trade union activists academics and lawyers that greeted the rejection of professor Tunde Adeniran by the United States of America, as Nigeria’s Ambassador nominee.

The common refrain was that Professor Adeniran,s rejection has brought shame to the country.Prof. Adeniran was reportedly rejected by the United States government as Nigeria’s envoy to that country on account of his son’s alleged involvement in serial gang rape in the United States.
His son Adedamola 20, is reportedly held in custody in the United States without bail alongside two other Nigerians allegedly involved in the gang rape of some American girls.
Senators Effiong Bob (PDP, Akwa Ibom Northeast) and Abubakar Sodangi (PDP, Nasarawa West) both members of the Senate committee on Foreign Affairs which cleared Adeniran before his approval by the Senate claimed that they were not aware of the alleged criminal inclination of the nominee’s son. A third member of the committee, Senator Osita Izunaso (PDP, Imo West) claimed ignorance of the alleged indictment of Prof. Adeniran’s son and did not comment on the issue.
Chairman of the Senate committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Jibril Aminu could not be reached as at press time on the development.
“That fact was not before us that is why we conducted all these hearings so that people who have established facts could have briefed us, so I am not aware except reading of it today (yesterday) in the paper,’’ Senator Bob told Saturday Vanguard yesterday on telephone.
“We were not aware of the criminal allegation against the son and if we were aware the man would not have been cleared,’’ he further affirmed.
Speaking in the same tone, Senator Sodangi said:
“I am just hearing of it from you. It is very embarrassing if it is true and it is a matter of investigation and if it has happened it is actually a very, very embarrassing situation to the Professor himself and as well to the country.’’ “Of course we have people who are very clean who have no skeleton in their cupboards that we can take.”
Senator Sodangi said that the case if established was another reason why parents should show godly examples to their children. “This is a lesson to all of us that we should be living above board and that we should be very godly because if we bring up our boys wrongly their misbehavior will affect us one day and even above all, in the hereafter.’’

What is happening?

What is happening?

The forum has been dull for some period and I have waited for good news to come from some angles but none … I am still waiting .

We welcome everyone back from the long vacation.

Personally, I returned after some months of ‘partial’ absence to meet lots of confusions, many questions and few answers in the community which has the Nigerian Embassy or KINGDOM (as it has been recently baptised) on one side and the community on the other side.

Can an informed member enlighten us on some of these:

1. Why did the Nigerian community get a police authority to have a protest march to the Nigerian embassy Rome ?

2. Why was the Protest march cancelled?

3. Another protest is being organized, who is behind it and why?

I suppose these three questions may lead to most of the recent info in the community.

Thanks.

We are waiting,

Hilary hits Nigeria: Your problem is failure of governance

Hilary hits Nigeria: Your problem is failure of governance

United States Secretary of State, Mrs Hilary Clinton, Wednesday night delivered a damning verdict, blaming Nigeria’s inability to take her seat among the 20 top nations in the world on failure of governance.

Answering questions at a Town Hall meeting organised by the Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) and the U.S. Embassy in Abuja with the theme Nigeria: Towards a better future, Clinton noted that Nigeria could have featured at the last meeting of the G20 nations, but for myriad of problems, notably corruption, bad governance and the concentration of wealth among few top people to the detriment of the masses.

She asserted that it was up to the citizens to shape the country’s future.
Clinton also identified faulty electoral system as a setback. And to get things right, she stated unequivocally that Nigeria must have a truly independent electoral council that would guarantee free and fair election and give the citizenry the much-desired benefits of democracy.

While stating that the foundation of democracy was trust, the US Secretary of State, also reminded that such democracy should be nurtured by free election, just judiciary and a solid democratic institution.

“We recognise that Nigeria is at a cross-road and it is imperative that citizens be involved and engaged in helping to chart the future of this great nation. “Today I’m in Nigeria, a country that produces two million barrels of oil a day, has the seventh largest oil reserve than any country in the world.
“But according to the UN, the poverty rate in Nigeria has gone up from 46 per cent to 76 per cent over the last 13 years,’’ Clinton said.

She gave reasons why Nigeria was still at a crossroad to include the destructive legacy of colonialism, devastating civil wars and other external forces.
“But as President Barrack Obama said in Ghana, the future of Africans is up to Africans and the future of Nigeria is up to Nigerians,” she said.

Clinton further said: “The most immediate source of the disconnect between Nigeria’s wealth and its poverty is the failure of its governance at the local, state and federal levels.
“The 100,200 million barrels of oil importation are staggering, but they do not tell you how many hospitals and roads could have been built.

“They do not tell you how many schools could have been opened or how many Nigerians could have attended colleges,” she said.

Clinton quoted the World Bank recent statistics as stating that Nigeria had lost 300 billion dollars during the last three decades as a result of all of the problems listed above.
“Therefore, it is imperative that we look at where Nigeria is today and in the spirit of friendship and partnership of a country that has made its own mistakes and had its own problems.
“We look for ways to help one another, in particularly to help the people of this country,” Clinton stressed.
On the seven-point agenda of Yar’Adua’s administration, the wife of former US president expressed her government’s support. She, however, expressed conviction that the success of the agenda would largely depend on the efforts of the citizenry.

Clinton believed that the civil society and the media had much to do, stressing that everyone should come together to uphold the tenets of true democracy and be the watchdog.
She wondered why Nigeria had not got her efforts at true democracy rewarded, when countries such as India with about 600 million voters, as well as Indonesia with only 10 years democratic experience, were making commendable headway.

Nigeria, according to Clinton, had a future but she quickly added that there was the need to have free and fair election in 2011.
She, therefore, challenged Nigerians to work hard to achieve genuine democracy emphasizing that, “it is up to you, it is your responsibility.”

On the Niger Delta issue, Clinton assured Nigeria of her country’s support for the peace process. She said from what she was told, government had taken the right steps towards achieving lasting peace in the region.
Participants at the forum included members of the civil society groups, women group, labour and the media.

I am Hungry, Please Re-brand me

I am Hungry, Please Re-brand me

By: Salisu Suleiman ssuleiman@gmail.com

I am Nigeria. I have millions of acres of arable land and billions of cubic litres of water, but I cannot feed myself. So I spend $1 billion to import rice and another $2 billion to import milk. I produce rice, but don’t eat it. I have 60 million cattle but no milk. I am hungry, please re-brand me.

I drive the latest cars in the world but have no roads. I lose family and friends everyday on roads for which funds have been looted. I lose my young, my old, and my most brainy and productive people to the potholes, craters and crevasses they travel on everyday. I am in permanent mourning, please re-brand me.

My school has no teacher and my classroom has no roof. I take lecture notes through the window and live with 15 others in a single room. All my professors have gone abroad, and the rest are awaiting visas. I am a university graduate, but I am illiterate. I want a future, please re-brand me.

Malaria, typhoid and many other preventable diseases send me to hospitals which have no doctors, no medicines and no power. So my wife gives birth with candle light and surgery is performed by quacks. All the nurses have gone abroad and the rest are waiting to go also. I have the highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world and future generations are dying before me. I am hopeless, hapless and helpless, please re-brand me.

I wanted change so I stood all day long to cast my vote. But even before I could vote, the results had been announced. When I dared to speak out, silence was enthroned by bullets. My rulers are my oppressors, and my policemen are my terrors. I am ruled by men in mufti, but I am not a democracy. I have no verve, no vote, no voice, please re-brand me.

I have 50 million youths with no jobs, no present and no future. So my sons in the North have become street urchins and his brothers in the South have become militants. My nephews die of thirst in the Sahara and his cousins drown in the waters of the Mediterranean. My daughters walk the streets of Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt, while her sisters parade the streets of Rome and Amsterdam. I am inconsolable, please re-brand me.

My people cannot sleep at night and cannot relax by day. They cannot use ATM machines, nor use cheques. My children sleep through staccato of AK 47s see through the mist of tear gas. The leaders have looted everything on the ground and below. They walk the land with haughty strides and fly the skies with private jets. They have stolen the future of generations yet unborn and have money they cannot spend in several lifetimes, but their brothers die of hunger. I want justice, please re-brand me.

I can produce anything, but import everything. So my toothpick is made in China; my toothpaste is made in South Africa; my salt is made in Ghana; my butter is made in Ireland; my milk is made in Holland; my shoe is made in Italy; my vegetable oil is made in Malaysia; my biscuit is made in Indonesia; my chocolate is made in Turkey and my table water made in France. My taste is far-flung and foreign, please re-brand me.

My people are cancerous from the greed of their friends who bleach palm oil with chemicals; my children died because they drank ‘My Pikin’ with NAFDAC numbers; my poor die because kerosene explodes in their faces; my land is dead because all the trees have been cut down; flood kills my people yearly because the drainages are clogged; my fishes are dead because the oil companies dump waste in my rivers; my communities are vanishing into the huge yawns of gully erosion, and nothing is being done. My livelihood is in jeopardy, and I am in the uttermost depths of despondence, please re-brand me.

I have genuine leather but choose to eat it. So I spend a billion dollars to import fake leather. I have four refineries, but prefer to import fuel, so I waste more billions to import petrol. I have no security in my country, but would rather send troops to keep the peace in another man’s land. I have 160 dams, but can not get water to drink, so I buy ‘pure’ water that roils my innards. I have a million children waiting to enter universities, but my ivory dungeons can only take a tenth. I have no power, but choose to flare gas, so my people have learnt to see in the dark and stare at the glare of naked flares. I have no direction, please re-brand me.

My people pray to God every morning and every night, but commit every crime known to man because re-branded identities will never alter the tunes of inbred rhythms. Just as the drums of heritage heralds the frenzied jingles, remember - the Nigerian soul can only be Nigerian - fighting free from the cold embrace of a government that has no spring, no sense, no shame. So we watch the possessed, frenzied dance, drenched in silent tears as freedom is locked up in democracy’s empty cellars. I need guidance, please re-brand me.

But then, why can I not simply be me, without being re-branded? Or does my complexion cloud the color of my character? Does my location limit the lengths my liberty? Does the spirit of my conviction shackle my soul? Does my mien maim the mine of my mind? And is this life worth re-branding? I am not yet born, please re-brand me.

NIGER DELTA ........THE HELL

LA RICADUTA

a cura della Redazione Report
In onda domenica 7 giugno ore 21.00

Nigeria United fan kills rivals

A Manchester United football fan in south-eastern Nigeria drove a minibus into a crowd of Barcelona supporters, killing four people, police say.

Ten other people were wounded in the incident in Ogbo town, after United lost Wednesday's European Champions League Final 2-0 to the Spanish team.

A police spokeswoman told Reuters news agency: "The driver passed the crowd, then made a U-turn and ran into them."

He is now in police custody. Both teams have a large fan base in Nigeria.

"The man confessed to doing it on purpose," police spokeswoman Rita Inoma Abbey told the BBC.

"He now says he doesn't know why he did it, but it was an intentional act."

Football fans across Africa closely follow the European leagues, which recruit some of the continent's best players.

Earlier this month, a Kenyan Arsenal fan hanged himself after his team's defeat in Champions League semi-final second leg by Manchester United.

A COUNTRY WITHOUT ELECTRICITY

“…. I am Resident in Abuja . I bought a new refrigerator since 10 days but no electricity to see if it is functioning. The current came for 10 minutes yesterday but couldn’t start the new fridge because of ‘low/half current’;Nigerians will

understand this jargon.

Is it advisable to inform the dealer of this ‘no current issue’ so that the guarantee date starts on whatever month electricity returns to Abuja and Nigeria in general….?”

Enugu People enjoys 3 Months Free Wireless Internet Service
by Ezeaku Victor C

As I write this article, I am using Enugu Wireless (Free) Internet Service. If you reside in the city of Enugu State of Nigeria, it is time for you to enjoy the three months free wireless internet service, courtesy of the Enugu State government and Zinox Technologies Limited.

The Enugu state wireless internet service called Coal City Wi-Fi will be available free for the first 3 months. After the initial 3 months Enugu state government promises to subsidize access cost to Coal City WiFi in order to make it affordable to Enugu residents.

The Enugu State Governor, Sullivan Chime is really committed to fulfilling his pledge to transform Enugu State into one of the Most technologically-advanced state in Nigeria. Before the launching of the Enugu Wireless internet service, getting access to internet was more of trouble to Enugu residents.

How do you get access to the 3 months free Enugu internet service?

For residents of Enugu to use the coal city 3 months free wireless internet service, they need to subscribe. You can subscribe to Coal City Wi-Fi at Community Resource Centre Enugu, opposite the new Enugu State Judiciary Headquarters or at Hotel Presidential Enugu. There you will be given a form to fill, after which you will be given a username, password, for accessing the wireless network

For you to use the coal city Wi-Fi, you will need a laptop computer or a desktop computer with a build in Wi-Fi or external wireless internet card that comes in many forms

The simplest way to access Coal City Wi-Fi is with a laptop with built in Wi-Fi. Most modern laptop computers comes with inbuilt Wi-Fi.

Even if you do not have a laptop with inbuilt Wi-Fi, you can still use your laptop to enjoy the coal city Wi-Fi. All you need to do is to buy a wireless card. I will advise you buy the USB wireless card. The USB wireless card can work on both laptop and desktop.

The major problem Enugu State residents are facing with the coal city Wi-Fi is that the internet service is not yet in most places. For you to browse with the coal city Wi-Fi, you have to go to certain location. I hope the coal city internet Wi-Fi will reach all nook and crannies in Enugu.

The benefit of the Enugu State Internet service cannot be overemphasized. The Enugu state wireless internet service will in no small measure enhance quick access to up-to date information across the web. Such access to information will give rise to fast technological development in Enugu State. The role of internet in technological development in Nigeria cannot be too stressed. The internet has a great role to play in the development of any nation both technologically and otherwise.

With the launch of the Enugu State wireless internet service, secondary and tertiary institutions (Enugu State University of Science and Technology ESUT, Enugu State University of Science and Technology College of Medicine (Paklane/Enugu State University of Science and Technology Teaching Hospital (ESUTCOM), Institute of Management and Technology Enugu (IMT), etc) domiciled in Enugu will now have easy access to internet. Such easy access to internet service will help provide an enhanced media for learning and research.

On the other hand, I am terrified about the negative use of the wireless internet service by yahoo yahoo boys in Enugu (internet fraudster) With such wireless internet service, most internet fraudsters will use the service to commit internet crimes. It is really a great challenge to Enugu state government to device a means of tracking cyber criminals who will want exploit the internet service negatively.
