Street Life in Lagos - Witness - Al Jazeera English
Filmmaker: Joe Loncraine
Lagos, Nigeria's financial capital, is one of the fastest growing megacities on earth. Every day thousands of people arrive in the biggest city in Africa to start a new life and forge a new, better future. Many come from outside Nigeria.
Jean and Christian, both teachers, are from Benin. They came to Lagos to seek their fortunes and live and work in one of the most famous slums in Africa, Makoko. Here they take us on a journey of their adopted city, showing us the spirit of enterprise and survival that its residents need to make a living.
A canoe or a motorbike can make a huge difference, while those with a generator or those scavaging the rubbish heaps all try to get by in this tough, vibrant city.
Street Life in Lagos can be seen from Tuesday, May 24, at the following times GMT: Tuesday: 2230; Wednesday: 0930; Thursday: 0330; Friday: 1630; Saturday: 2230; Sunday: 0930; Monday: 0330; Tuesday: 1630.

Sex War: Ghanaian Prostitutes Battle Nigerian Invaders
Sex War: Ghanaian Prostitutes Battle Nigerian Invaders
They are currently spoiling for war, P.M.NEWS has learnt through News One, a Ghanaian news outfit.
The sex workers who operate in Adum, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region, said they were disenchanted that younger and prettier girls from Nigeria are gradually taking over the sex business as they could hardly retain their usual customers.
According to investigation, if not for the intervention of the assembly member for the area, Albert Osei-Banahene, the enraged sex workers would have protested nude and marched from one office building to another, just to get the authorities to come to their aide.
According to one of the sex workers, “it is not that they are better than us in bed but as you know, most men prefer younger girls and these Nigerian girls are younger.
“Some are still in their teens and their agents protect them but we do not have agents who make things easier for us so. So, the conditions of work are not fair. We would start attacking any underage ashawo from Nigeria because they are spoiling the market.”
Though both groups are prostituting, the Ghanaian girls have cleverly named themselves commercial sex workers while they call their Nigerian counterparts ‘ashawos,’ a more derogatory term for prostitutes.
We learnt that a group of Nigerians take these girls to Ghana where they link them up with prominent Ghanaians and share some percentage of the money the prostitutes get from the trade.
According to the Ghanaian sex workers, the arrival of sexier girls from Nigeria is making business very competitive and compelling them to either lower their rates or lose customers.
Not pleased about the development, the disillusioned sex workers have declared their preparedness to hit the streets in protest should authorities fail to respond to their call and put in place appropriate measures to arrest the worrying situation.
In an interview with an online portal, the sex workers revealed that some Nigerians living in Kumasi have made it their business of bringing in very pretty sex workers from Nigeria to engage in the trade in the country.“Having realised the potential in the business, some Nigerians living in the city have decided to make it their business by bringing sex workers from their country to come and work here,” one of the disgruntled sex workers observed.
“When they bring them, they initially put them in hotels, before hiring rooms for them to practise their trade but we do not have agents or promoters so we are losing the market even in our own country,” another dissatisfied sex worker noted.
According to them, they would do everything within their means to ensure that the practice was stopped, because they believe that as Ghanaians, they have exclusive right to the trade.
“We cannot allow Nigeria to take over everything in the country including the sex trade,” the sex workers emphasized.
The assembly member for the area, Hon Albert Osei-Banahene, who has been appealing to the sex workers to remain calm, urged the government to take up the matter and ensure that it is resolved amicably.
He noted that it was important for the government to come in strongly because of the ages of the girls who are purported to have been brought into the city for sex trade.

A 13-month-old Nigerian baby dies after being refused hospital treatment
Cernusco sul Naviglio, 12 April 2010. After the approval of the racial laws, (better known as the “security package”) there have been more and more cases in Italy of human beings been refused treatment by hospitals and doctors because they are “clandestini” (illegal immigrants) or because their NHS card has expired.
“The parents, fraught with grief, have decided to take the hospital to court on the charge of manslaughter, and is being assisted by their lawyer, Marco Martinelli. It is important to ensure that justice is done” says EveryOne Group, “even if cases like these are far from rare. The legal offices of the Italian health structures seek out every means possible to deny the victims' stories (or even turn reality on its head) all with the sole aim of appearing “clean and spotless” to the Ministry of Health from where their funding comes. In the course of its work, our group has witnessed many desperate cases where vulnerable human beings have been refused medical treatment, and we have had denials and even threats from hospital staff. The case in question remains a tragedy, the death of another innocent human being (a baby!) due to the racial laws in force in Italy - laws for which many people are responsible: the institutions that passed the laws; the parties of the opposition that sat back and did nothing to fight the measures; the press that has censored the criminal nature of these anti-constitutional, anti-democratic laws; and all those citizens who actively participate, by going along with, and even collaborating in the operations of ethnic persecution that have been underway in our country for several years”.

Reps move against corporate prostitution in banks
By Luka Binniyat
ABUJA—The House of Representatives yesterday passed into Second Reading a bill that prohibits the use of Nigerian women by banks in manners that makes them compromise to meet set targets and keep their jobs.
The bill, however, went through a heated debate before it was passed through a voice count that marginally defeated opponents of the bill.
The bill, tagged: A Bill for an Act to Prohibit Corporate Prostitution and Exploitation of Women in Corporate Organisation and Other Matters Connected therein, was sponsored by Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila.
Leading the debate, Gbajabiamila said that in the quest for making huge profits, Nigerian banks put their female employees in difficult conditions that push some of them to engage in corporate prostitution, if they must meet their targets.
“We have seen where a female bank employee was given a job in January and by September was expected to meet a target of N500 million,” he said.
“It is no longer news that these women are seen everyday parading the corridors of offices knocking on doors, and once let in, some would begin to weep, begging for help to meet their target or they will get sacked,” he said
He said that many marriages and relationship have been broken as a result of this practice.

NIGERIANS TO BOYCOTT SONY IF.....
News - Africa news
Lagos, Nigeria - Expressing anger at what it called the rising spate of Nigeria bashing around the world, the country's opposition Action Congress (AC) party Sunday called for a boycott of Sony products to show their displeasure against the Japanese firm's derogatory advert on Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Lagos and obtained by PANA here Sunday, the party said boycotting Sony products would ''send a strong signal to other companies out there that may be inclined to copy Sony''.
AC said the offensive part of the advert, on Sony's popular Play Station 3 Console, which says ''You can't believe everything you read on the internet, otherwise I will be a Nigerian millionnaire by now'', was aimed at sho wing that Nigerians are not capable of conducting a decent business.''
``Yet, Sony, which is behind this advert, has been doing good business in Nigeria for decades. We are appalled at the companyâ?s audacity, and we believe that its belated and half-hearted apology has not diminished the damage done to our people by the advert. Even if the advert has been pulled, the version posted on various sites around the world, including youtube, continue to run,'' the party said.
Following complaints by Nigeria's Minister of Information and Communication, Prof. Dora Akunyili, Sony has applogised over the advert, in addition to withdrawing it from circulation.
In a related development, AC has also joined the growing list of individuals and organisations complaining about a sci-fi movie, District Nine, which the government said portrays Nigerians as cannibals, criminals and prostitutes.
The movie was set in South Africa and produced by a South African, a situation that prompted the AC to say it was shocked that a fellow African nation could make itself available as a platform to attack Nigeria.
``The fact that the movie 'District Nine'...was set in South Africa and produced by a South African is a great shock to us, considering the long-standing good r e lations between our two countries, and Nigeria's sacrifice in helping to liberate the co untry from the throes of apartheid,'' it said.
But the party blamed the disrespect being shown to Nigeria on its government, saying: ``It does not matter how good the ordinary Nigerian is, the world cannot r e spect a country that cannot freely and fairly elect its leaders, a country where votes are stolen with impunity and unelected leaders are holding sway.''

RE-BRANDING......football...from little to big

Headaches of re-branding
The work on a positive redirecting towards good our ways of life, attitude to things and the general culture is needed at this time however, having in mind the effects of globalization, migration, emigration and ‘virtual nomadism’ i.e. TV , internet phones etc.
This said I would like to point at some neo colonial trends observed in
I have nothing against someone being a supporter to any club any place but the worrying thing was the reaction of my cousins, nephews and friends on my question and enquiries of our local clubs like the Rangers international of
Rangers used and is still more than a football club to most of us…...something more than a religion. I will come to Rangers one day. Some of them told me “..aah uncle, Queens park rangers is in Div two oooo” but I insisted I ment Enugu Rangers and not QPR of UK, but was shocked to see that some of them were ignorant of the football clubs in Nigeria and were even stunned that someone of -blog and Facebook age- was talking of ‘these local things’.
I inquired of (IICC) shooting stars, Kano Pillars, Enyimba, Vasco Da Gama of Enugu; Niger Tornadoes, Stationary Stores, Racca Rovers, Ranchers Bees, Adamawa United , El Kanemi Warriors FC, Julius Berger FC, Sharks FC etc. I had to shot up because I observed that one of my younger friends was embarrassed by my “out of date and bushman’s enquires”. I wondered if the re-branding wouldn’t have started from a closer distance i.e appreciating ourselves and culture first.
FYI, I am also an ardent, sworn and baptized supported of ROMA FC since 1982 and I like Chelsea and Inter of Milan just because they are more multiethnic than other UK & Italian clubs respectively.
It was a ‘comic shock’ when a local Master of ceremony in a fund raising show for a church construction called on the microphone ”….now is the time for the supporters of the Gunners to go and make their generous donations, after them followed Man .U, then the Blues supporters. All the three names were followed by a great turmoil in the church and what I believe were generous competitive donations. Sincerely I felt bad.

Globalization has come to stay, I love it. As we re-brand we should also pay more attention on the erosions on our cultures in some areas we sometimes neglect.

MARRIAGE IN JAIL..........

He, a Croatian and she is from Nigeria both Pozzuoli and Secondiagliano (Italy) prisons respectively. They came to know each other through mails. Today Darko 38 years and Sandra 28 years are husband and wife .The ceremony was celebrated by Ref Fernando the chaplain of Pozzuoli prison on the 15th October 2008; before then Darko and Sandra never met each other .
A love story that looks like an 18th century story and was able to open the bars of the prison for the couple. Two years ago the Nigerian received a 'good wish' letter from an unknown person and from then both started to exchange letters talking of their life experiences.
Sandra on arrival to the ‘promised land’ from Africa got into a lot of problems that landed her in (Italian)jail. Darko had a worse past; an ex officer in the Croatian army, captured and tortured by the Serbian army, In 2001 he entered Italy , committed some offences and ended up in jail.
They have very few things in common like both being Catholics.
On the great day 15 th October Darko arrived Pozzouli prison for the ceremony on board a police car; Sandra very beautiful on her white gown was there waiting for him : both looked at each other for the first time…an infinit emotion.
They walked to the garden of the prison for the ceremony. The ceremony was brief. The witnesses were four voluntary workers and prison educationists. Now Darko and Sandra are husband and wife and would like to live far from Italy. This year 2009 when they must have finished their sentences in Italy then may start to dream.

(Matilde Andolfo)

How to say I Luv U in Nigeria
How to say I Luv U in Nigeria
It begins: "I swear, I will make sure I give you HIV..." But it's not an abusive threat, it's a "romantic" text message copied from a book on sale all over Nigeria that professes to give young people the words they need to court the woman or man of their dreams. "H is for Happiness and joy forever with an I: Incomparable love that will never V: Vanish until death do us part. I love you," the message concludes. The book, called "Touching the heart through unforgettable text messages (vol.2)" is one of several on sale in markets around the country that give suggestions to tongue-tied young lovers. Text compulsion Nigerians are compulsive text senders. Corny "romantic" messages and jokes are constantly being sent, received and recycled. Many men complain that women send them "hot" text messages, but all they really want is money, while women say they are pestered by men sending "romantic" texts when all their suitors really want is sex. But the book's author, 33-year-old entrepreneur Femi Emmanuel, says he writes text messages for people who are too busy, or illiterate, to properly express what is in their hearts. He is not married but says he sends "special" text messages to his girlfriend - original ones, not out of his books. The sale of all four volumes has been such a success he has bought a car with the proceeds. "People have really embraced the mobile phone here in Nigeria, but they may not be smart enough to know what to say in these kind of situations, or maybe they're too busy, running an office or whatever," he said. 'Bollywood' inspired He gets inspiration from Indian "Bollywood" films and Mexican or Nigerian soap operas. "I thought 'that's good,' I paused the DVD and copied down the subtitles." The text message threatening HIV was inspired by watching a Nigerian film. "In the film, a man threatened a woman with giving her HIV. I thought how could I turn this acronym into a message?" "You could send the first sentence on its own," he says. "You are putting them in suspense, to create fear, and then you follow up with the interpretation that will give them joy and happiness." The BBC asked people on the streets of the capital Abuja what they thought of the message. Ferdinand Nwonye, 36, a civil servant, said he thought the message was funny. "The person would first be scared, and then as they went through it they would start laughing," he said. He added that the text books are mostly used by teenagers. "I like sending romantic texts to my wife, but I think of my own, I don't need one of these books." But not everyone sees it that way. Businesswoman Janet Babalola, 35, says she gets romantic text messages from her husband. "But if I got something like that I would be shocked," she says. Mr Emmanuel, who paid for his high school education by selling newspapers at the roadside, borrowed 75,000 naira ($637; £363) from his brother to publish the first book. He sold thousands of copies in cities all over the country. Cheesy? What may appear cheesy and ridiculous to western eyes may not be so creepy to Nigerians, says a well-known agony aunt. Nana, who answers readers' questions about relationships in the Weekly Trust newspaper, says Nigerians might see the words differently to native speakers of English. "I think this boy who wrote these texts is a bit of a poet," she says. "A lot of us in this part of the world are translating in our heads constantly from our local languages to English." "A lot of Nigerian languages don't have a difference between 'love' and 'like', so a lot of these messages will come across as a love proposition when what the sender really means is 'I like you'." But the texts can also serve as "adverts" which people can use to attract attention to themselves, with seedy intent, she says. "Many girls and boys too are out on the road looking for customers, and it is only natural that technology has made that a bit easier. -------------------------------------------------------------- |

As gay church arrives Nigeria
| As gay church arrives Nigeria, Christian, Muslim clerics declare:It's evil! • 'National Assembly must fight it' By JOSSY IDAM & PAUL OMO OBADAN Sunday, September 14, 2008
A welter of criticism has greeted the emergence of the first openly declared gay church in the country. Both Christian and Muslim clerics have not only condemned it, they equally dismissed it as evil. In very strong terms, therefore, they want the National Assembly to enact laws to stop what they describe as a festering sore from gaining roots and spreading. The Archdeacon of Oleh Diocese in Delta State, Ven. M.A.E Igri, in his reaction, said "the church is not biblical and out of tune with God's plan. God created man and woman to be married to themselves. The situation where a man will be married to a man is wrong and unacceptable." Coincidentally, while the Lagos debauchery was on, Anglican priests in Nigeria were holding an All-Anglican Clergy conference at Nsukka, Enugu State, where they spoke against gay marriages that is currently threatening the cohesion in the Church. Similarly, the National Missioner of the Ansar-u-deen Society of Nigeria, Abdurrahman Ahmad called on the National Assembly to legislate against homosexuality in Nigeria. Said he: "All people of conscience and people of faith must rise to fight this evil." Genesis For the first time in Nigeria, men who openly declared themselves as homosexuals gathered penultimate weekend at a church in Ojudu, a Lagos suburb. Under the auspices of a yet-to-be registered church - House of Rainbow Metropolitan Community Church - the men held a seminar and night vigil. The heavily guarded event paraded men who wore necklaces, rings, conducted themselves and spoke softly like women. Grand Irony Ironically, the homosexuals held the fiesta in the hall of United Bible University, Yakoyo Road, Ojudu, Lagos. The venue also serves as a place of worship for Christian Pentecostal Mission (CPM). The event, Sunday Sun learnt, was championed by a lawyer and Theologian, Rev. Roland Babajide Macaulay. On the days of the event, a retinue of mean – looking, ill-tempered security men barred our reporter from entering the venue and meeting the men. However, when Sunday Sun revisited the place Wednesday evening, the hall, SARRMAC Auditorium, was being arranged for an evening worship by CPM. The church's minister distanced the CPM from it. "We have no connection with them whatsoever. We only hire this hall for service. We don't own it," he said. But he however, acknowledged hearing of the event. Unmasked As revealed by a plaque on the wall of the auditorium, the building was commissioned by the convener of the event, Rev. Roland Babajide Macaulay, on Saturday, November 10, 2001. Sunday Sun investigation reveals that the man is the son of the founder, president and director of studies of United Bible University, Rev. Dr. Augustus Olakunle Macaulay. When our reporter sought to speak with him, a female secretary of his said he was out of town. On his own Contacted on phone, Rev. Macaulay denied having any link with the event. "God forbid! I don't support any thing that's contrary to the teachings of the bible and God," he said, sounding shocked. Asked to comment on his son's glaring contradictory stance, he declined, saying, "I don't want to discuss that. All I can say is that the man is my son and he's over 40." Pressed for a proper interview, Rev. Dr. Augusts said he was at Owerri conducting a seminar, and from there he would head to Akwa Ibom and won't be back until end of the month. The United Bible University was established in 1994. The date is boldly emblazoned on its outer wall. To prove the top connection of the owner of the University, a new storey building - Moses Iloh Hall - was commissioned on Saturday June 17, 2006, by Hon. Oluyemi Cadoso, former Commissioner for Budget and Planning in Lagos State. The institution, according to a message on the wall of the new hall, aims to "develop moral Christian and ministerial education." Honours list A board in the University's SARRMAC Auditorium listed Mrs O.A. Adeboye as O.A. Adeboye as Appreciation Award and Best Award Winner, for 1980 to 1994. Those listed as Activity Award Winners include Mr. C.A. Sodipo, Lady Evang. C. Arinola Ogunye, Mr. A.O Adeneye, Evang. S.A. Aroyehun, Mrs. E. Doyin Mould-Olupitan, Evang. V.A. Akande, Mr A.O. Oduwole, and Mrs B.A. Sodipo. Other names on the list include Mrs M.O. Makanjuola, Mrs Bandele Jacobs, Mr. J. Babatunde Ebadan, O. Oduwole and Mr. Emmanuel B.O. Shobande. Homosexuality and HIV/AIDS In a recent survey, Integrated Biological and Behaviour Surveillance ranks homosexuals second to female sex workers, as the group with the highest figure of HIV/AIDS. In fact, the survey puts the prevalence rate among men who have sex with men (MSM) at 13.5 percent. Closet existence Sunday Sun learnt that the church, House of Rainbow Metropolitan Community Church has been existing in the closet since 2006. The church, according to a source, is affiliated to other metropolitan community churches in America and Europe. In a public statement, Rev. Roland Macaulay is quoted as saying that the church is "a mission and vision to transform hearts, lives and history and especially, to help people reconcile their sexuality and spirituality." Raging controversy The ordination of gays as priests in the Anglican Church has raised a lot of dust and it is threatening to splinter the Anglican Communion. The leaders of the church in America and Britain have conciliatory view on the matter. But African bishops are resolute on non-admittance and ordination of gays. Woe betide them At a week-long All-Anglican Clergy Conference which ended penultimate Friday at Nsukka, Enugu state, the issue reverberated. The Primate of All Nigeria Anglican Communion, Most Rev. Peter Jasper Akinola said that, "Anglican orthodox members of this church are poised to do the mission of the church and those who say that gay is their concern woe onto them." Crime and punishment A lawyer in Lagos, Mr Godwin Ewa took a critical look at the gathering of gays and described it as a fad in Europe and America being imported into the country. "Nigeria is a dumping ground for all manners of products and perverted ideas and lifestyle. From this development, it won't be long before we begin to hear of gay rights, same sex marriage and so on," he said. Lamenting that homosexuality is an infringement and a complete assault on the nation's core values, Ewa blamed it on the lax law and lenient punishment for offenders. The law classifies it as "unnatural offences" under Section 214 and "indecent practices between males" under Section 217 of the Criminal Code," he said. According to him, the Criminal Code criminalizes homosexual, gay marriages, lesbianism and sodomy. When an offender is convicted, he or she could be jailed for up to 14 years. |
