The cause of the fire cannot be verified, however, a fireman at the incident pointed out that arson might not be the likely cause of the fire. He said that men of the fire service are on top of the situation, as they have succeed in restraining the fire in the market from spreading.
A trader at the timber shed who gave his name as Mr. Amaechi estimated the damage to be in the region of N2 billion.

Fr. Mbaka resurrects democracy in Igboland.....SKC Ogbonnia:

SKC Ogbonnia: Fr. Mbaka resurrects democracy in Igboland

Any political system without dynamic opposition necessary for the essential competition, accountability, and checks and balances is tantamount to dictatorship and abuse of power. But that has been the case with the presidential politics of the Southeast (SE) zone of Nigeria since the recent democratic transition. The rationale is that a wholesale support for the national ruling party offers best hope, and any counter opinion is a naked sin.
This idea had seemed like the ultimate game-changer. For the various national governments quickly reciprocated, offering rounds of elite portfolios to politicians from the Igbo Southeast. The presidents also backed their agenda with promises and policies that usually appear like the erudite solution to the Igbo’s ageless cries for marginalization. Yet the condition of federal amenities in the zone remains a bad dream told in a hurry.
To make matters worse, the vulnerable masses are usually told to stay the course, with most of the SE governors begging President Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan not to campaign in the zone this time. To them, the Igbos should stand 100% behind the president, regardless of whether he delivered on past promises or not. They would argue that, even if not for performance, the people should lend their support based on the parochial mantra that Jonathan also bears Igbo names—“Ebele and Azikiwe”.
Consequently, there is no strong voice alert to expose the failures of the federal government toward effective leadership in the SE zone. The quagmire becomes more glaring when considered that their two premier pressure groups, the Ohaneze NdiIgbo and World Igbo Congress, have become infiltrated by political buccaneers who sing the president’s praises at home and abroad. Perhaps individuals can raise pertinent issues, but a salient problem with the Igbos is that since the death of Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the zone has not identified a leader with mass following who could call a spade a spade.
Enter Rev. Fr. Camillus Ejike Mbaka, the dynamic Roman Catholic priest, whose words are enough to mesmerize his fiercest opponents, let alone the Christian faithful, including politicians, who throng day in and day out to his Adoration Ministry in Enugu for spiritual healing—and from far and wide.
One of such faithful is no other person than Dame Patience Jonathan, the ebullient First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who visited the priest on November 9, 2014 to seek heavenly blessings for the husband’s forthcoming 2015 presidential election. Given the dominant support the president enjoys in Igboland and within the Christian Association of Nigeria, Fr. Mbaka glowingly eulogized President Jonathan to the high heavens while invoking the Holy Spirit to stoke a fiery swipe at the opposition, brazenly associating the leading opposition party to the deadly Boko Haram insurgents terrorizing Nigeria. Lo and behold, the First Lady and the teeming congregation roared in agreement. The open aspersions on the opposition and consequent anointment of the sitting president easily served as a pious reminder that there would be no cause for competition for Igbo votes in the presidential polls. Even more, the supporters of the president across the country quickly hailed, lustily drumming the ocassion to further legitimize the reverend gentleman as an unsung saint. But that was then.
As expected, the Prophesy sent shock waves throughout the breath and depth of the Nigerian polity. While the opposition embraced it with pomp and pageantry, the ruling party and its supporters have castigated the priest, now comparing him to the biblical Judas Iscariot.
But the two camps should have no cause for alarm. Prophesies are known to work in miraculous ways. Besides, objective criticism or competition should not discourage but challenge human efforts to greater purpose and possibilities. President Jonathan can overcome the trepidations of the prophesy by doing the needful, exhibiting true leadership, challenging himself to the greater possibilities, starting by Nigeria
Either way, Nigerians, particularly the Igbo masses are the true winners.
The objective fact is that Mbaka’s prophesy is far beyond the simplistic equate of voting for Goodluck Jonathan or Muhammadu Buhari as we know it. Rather, the Prophesy has profoundly resurrected democracy in Igboland for the greater good of the society. For the first time in a long time, the Igbo masses are witnessing in presidential politics a semblance of opposition and the competition vitally essential for democracy, and their votes will not be taken for granted this time. President Jonathan, who was previously dissuaded from campaigning in Igboland, is now truly asking for votes in the zone, rendering accounts of his stewardship, and offering new promises as well as the much needed portions of the presidential war chest. It is also a win-win for democracy that General Buhari, having previously written off the Igbo votes, now sees a huge opening and has begun to vigorously campaign in Igbo cities, offering alternative solutions and his own promises.
The immediate effect is that the Igbos have rediscovered their true DNA and are more emboldened than ever. The Ohaneze, which had maintained a naïve posture, has now discarded its original idea for blanket endorsement and instead opted to list conditions for the people’s votes. The pro-Igbo party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which had already endorsed President Jonathan, is also seriously reevaluating. Even Alexander Ekwueme, an eminent Igbo figure of the ruling party and a former Vice President of Nigeria, never known for careless vituperations, has erupted with his own salvo, admonishing Jonathan for actions instead of mere words.
The Igbo masses are not left behind on the heightened awareness. They have begun to ask pertinent questions, and openly and rightly so, on numerous abandoned or phantom projects, most of which are fully funded but nothing to show on the ground. They are also asking about mass unemployment and kidnapping in the zone, the state of federal universities and teaching hospitals, the quality and state of Akanu Ibiam International Airport, 2nd River Niger Bridge and its PPP/Toll implications, Onitsha Seaport, the sixth state for South East, revitalizing Coal-for-Power, Gas Pipeline across Igbo mainland, inclusion of more Igbo states in OMPADEC, the Southeast/Southwest Rail Line, the endless massacre of Igbo Christians by Boko Haram under Jonathan’s watch; and the state of other infrastructures, particularly the two most important thoroughfares in Igboland: the Enugu/Port Harcourt and Enugu/Onitsha Express roads, constructed under Obasanjo’s military regime, but have remained death traps for decades, even after billions have been allocated.
These dateless but largely ignored projects, ordinarily the anticipated democratic dividend central to the welfare of Igbo masses, are squarely resurrected as part of the national debate; Thanks to the Prophesy of Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka!

GOOD INTENTIONS.......BAD EXECUTIONS

As  we praise the Governor  of Enugu state (Nigeria) and the authorities for many infrastructural development in the state;  one may not overlook the attitude of  so many contractors who  start kilometers of road projects in residential areas and abandon them  for a long time, thereby exposing the residents  of such areas to untold hardship, (damages to property)  and health hazards especially  respiratory problems  for unjustifiable period of time.

The pictures are that of Corner stone junction(Nike Lake Road) to Ugbene 2 since September  2013
May  these contractors be controlled  a little bit  closer,

Jubilation as first international flight takes off from Enugu airport
It was jubilation galore on Saturday as the first international flight from the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State took off to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with 153 passengers on board.
The flight was by Ethiopian Airlines, using a Boeing 737-800, which took off at 2.20pm.
The event was witnessed by four South-East state governors of Abia (Theodore Orji), Anambra (Peter Obi), Ebonyi (Martin Elechi) and Enugu (Sullivan Chime).
Others who witnessed the event were the Ministers of Aviation (Stella Oduah), Finance (Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala), Health (Onyebuchi Chukwu) and Power (Chinedu Nebo), as well as the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Anyim Pius Anyim.
Members of the National Assembly, led by the Deputy Senate President, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, state executive members and legislators, traditional rulers and captains of industry were also present at the brief ceremony.
Briefing newsmen in Enugu, Okonjo-Iweala described the day as historic in the lives of the people of the South-East zone and thanked President Goodluck Jonathan for making the project a reality.
Anyim described it as a dream come true for the people of the South-East, while Ekweremadu said that the introduction of international flights in the airport would make it easy for the people to travel to any part of the world.
Ekweremadu said the National Assembly would ensure adequate budgetary provision was made to complete the new terminal building.
The Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Obi, commended the President for fulfilling his promise to Ndigbo.
Oduah said that more airlines would soon commence operation at the airport and announced that the Nigerian national carrier would start operation before the end of the year.
The host governor, Chime, said the flight was part of a grand plan to change the economy of the South-East zone positively.

In his remarks, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Ethiopian Airline, Esayas Hailu, said the airline would operate four times a week from Enugu to Addis Ababa.
Hailu said the Igbo were very enterprising and needed an outlet right from their doorstep.
He said that very soon the flight would go daily.
A passenger, Nicodemus Igboabasi, a businessman from Anambra State, applauded the Federal Government for making the day a reality.
Igboabasi said it would reduce the cost of doing business and the stress of travelling long distances to board international flights from the zone.
Various traditional groups performed at the ceremony.
The Enugu route will be the airline’s 46th African and the 76th international destination.

Ethiopia Airlines begins international flights from Enugu airport

Ethiopia Airlines begins international flights from Enugu airport
 News    Monday, August 19, 2013

The Federal Government, weekend, confirmed that Ethiopian Airlines would commence direct flights to and from Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, from Saturday, August 24, 2013.
This would be the first international flights to be operated into the South East geo-political zone of the country, barely two years after the airport in Enugu was accorded international status.
Minister of Aviation, Princess Stella Oduah, who disclosed this in Abuja, said she had already written President Goodluck Jonathan informing him of the airlines' inaugural flight.
She said the airport's designation as an international airport was part of the aviation master plan of the present administration to give every zone in the country the opportunity to grow its full potentials in economic and social development.

With the foray of Ethiopian Airlines into Enugu, businessmen and other travellers from all the states of the South East as well as Edo and Delta now have the option of making their international travels through Enugu, rather than erstwhile reliance of far-aay Lagos and Abuja.
General Manager, Corporate Communication, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Yakubu Dati, said President Jonathan's administration had fulfilled his promise of giving every part of the country equal opportunity to develop and realise its dreams.

According to him, the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, was designed and built by the former Vice President, Dr Alex Ekwueme when he was only 26, while his vision of many years is now being fulfilled.

He said: "This Minister of Aviation has shown her determination to actualise the goals of the aviation master plan which the Jonathan administration has pegged its transformation agenda which objectives include giving every part of the country and every citizen the opportunity to grow to his full potential.

"With the international flight operations at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, a novel opportunity has been given to the people of the South East zone to expand their business horizon without stress and the inconveniences of having to travel far to catch international flights."

“Sullivan Chime is not dead” – Enugu State Government

gov-chimeContrary to the news making the rounds that the bed-ridden Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime has joined the late Yakowa and others, Enugu State government Sunday, debunked the rumours, saying the governor is alive and healthy.
According to the State Commissioner for Information, Mr Chucks Ugwuoke, the rumour is from the pit of hell, as he described the news as unfounded.
According to Ugwuoke, the Governor is doing well and will soon return to the government house in no distant time.
It would be recalled that the Governor was said to have died at an Indian hospital on Saturday, after battling an undisclosed protracted sickness, a news many have referred to as the work of rumour mongers.

Cult clash: One killed in Enugu

Cult clash: One killed in Enugu
From PETRUS OBI, Enugu

At least one person was confirmed dead in a fresh clash between two rival cult groups last weekend in the Abakpa Nike area of the Enugu State capital.
Police identified the victim as Emmanuel Obiekwe.
The Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the renewed cult war in the coal city, also disclosed that nine persons had already been arrested, adding that investigations were still on to unravel the cause of the trouble and identities of those involved.

He said: “The deceased was found in the Abakpa area of the capital and nine persons have been arrested; we don’t know yet if the deceased is a student but we suspect conflict between cult groups.
“Investigation is on and we would soon be in a better position to know what actually happened.”
There was already fear among residents of Ugbene 11 area of Abakpa where a good number of cultists were reported to have paraded the area at the weekend harassing and robbing their victims.
The latest clash, which was believed to be between the Black Axe, popularly known as ‘Ayes’, and ‘Bargas’ came less than two months after several people were murdered in a similar clash that contributed to the ban on the use of motorcycles popularly known as Okada in Enugu.

The proscription of Okada, which had received mixed feelings from different groups, was sequel to a law promulgated by the state House of Assembly.
Before the recent clash, the level of crime was believed to have reduced considerably as a result of the ban on Okada.

RANGERS INTERNATIONAL F, C.

Infinite emotions watching my beloved Rangers International of Enugu at their Stadium ( Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium) Enugu. This was my first time after about 21 years I last saw them in this arena.
It was nice seeing the Rangers (or what remained of them and their supporters) in this era of Man U, Chelsea, Gunners, Barça, AS Roma, Milan, Inter, Juve, Bayern etc crazy in Nigeria.
It was nice seeing their early (first 5 min) goal like the Rangers I used to know years back.
It was also fun seeing the Enugu fans criticizing non-stop and shouting disappointments at the home team just like their fathers did in ‘70s and ‘80s. I start to think that this behaviour is in our (Enugu) DNA, just like the invocation of yellow cards, red cards and may be other invented colors at every foul on our flying antelopes. Hahahhah.
OOhhh one of those ‘FAN ice cream’ bicycles of 20 years ago or so was also there !!!!!
The only new phenomenon was the presence of numerous very BEAUTIFUL COAL CITY GIRLS in the stadium. From their faces I doubted if many were understanding the game …but one thing was certain; they were all watching and admiring the boys inside and outside the arena and the boys were admiring and watching the football game . What a paradox and pity!!!!!
Rangers won the match against The Sunshine Stars 3-0.
Good night.
