Don Norman Obinna.
The real reasons the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) Tuesday night, sealed completely the business outlet of a popular elite and confectionary company, Chocolat Royal has emerged, The City Reporters can exclusively report.
Apart from the importation, storage and use of fake, unregistered and expired/unwholesome food products to produce consumables for customers, we can authoritatively report that Chocolat Royal was sealed by NAFDAC on discovery of six illegal 40ft cold rooms fully stocked with contaminated food products built on top of sewages (suck away pit) and in front of toilets.
Not only that majority of these food products discovered, have expired since 2004, (11- years ago) and the least 2013, the most worrisome aspect of it all was the discovery to the consternation of NAFDAC officials that the management of Chocolat Royal had revalidated the expiring dates of almost all the food products, while 90 % of them were not even written in English language and therefore not registered.
While two of the illegal cold rooms built in front of toilets were discovered at the Chocolat Royal headquarters at 267A Etim Iyang Crescent, another two were discovered and also sealed at N0 1 Karimu Kotun resident of the Chairman, Mr Amin Moussalli both located in Victoria Island Lagos.
Investigations revealed that Mr Moussalli the chairman of AIM consultants with chains of media houses which include, Cool, Nigeria Info, Wazobia FM stations, Cool as well as WEE television stations who is now at large travels abroad to source for companies whose food products have few months to expire.
This Lebanese business mogul receives these products mostly for free or at a reduced price and also gets paid from these companies to evacuate the products which ordinarily would have cost them colossal amount of money to dispose and ships in large quantities to Nigeria which has become his dumping ground for food toxic for close to two decades.
These products are then cleared at the wharf and offloaded inside the two cold rooms at his Karimu Kotun resident, Victoria Island where they are then transferred to Chocolat Royal headquarters and then used to prepare ice creams, chocolates, beverages and pastries for members of the public.
At the end of the double operations which lasted for nine hours, imported fake, unregistered and expired food products worth over N1bn stocked in these illegal cold rooms were evacuated in six Hilux vans and buses which NAFDAC stormed the place with.
This remarkable feat by NAFDAC was as a result of a tip off from The City Reporters editor/ associate editor New Telegraph  who for three years has investigated the activities of Chocolat Royal; a company reputable for playing host to top Nigerian and foreign echelons , including governors, legislatures, managing directors, artistes and others for close to two decades.
When the officials of Food and Drug regulatory Agency stormed Chocolat Royal at exactly 12:15PM with some team of mobile police officers, they were resisted vehemently from carrying out their duties by some senior staff of the confectionary company led by the Finance Director Mr. Idowu Adebayo and others who apparently were on the know of the plot by their Management to decimate Nigeria’s population through food poison.
Understanding the gravity of what was about to happen if eventually discovered, they denied NAFDAC officials’ access to the cold rooms and stores to forestall more discoveries after some large quantities of the expired food products were discovered in their freezers, kitchens and bars upstairs, requesting for search warrant from the officials; a ploy later discovered to be a strategy to enable them evacuate the cold rooms and stores.
The atmosphere was charged to the extent that the bouncers were almost engaging the NAFDAC officials in a brawl forcing the mobile police officers to apply force and made some arrests which eventually made most of them to retreat but access to the cold rooms and stores was not granted.
However, a little drama ensued when the obstinate management of the eatery invited other mobile police officers who were probably their accomplice to the scene to scare NAFDAC officials who they felt were acting illegally out of their premises, but the Superintendent of police who led the NAFDAC police team ordered them out.
On realizing that the operation was not illegal after they have put several calls across to some top shots in the society, the daughter of the Chairman who also is the Deputy Group MD of AIM group, Mrs. Tatiana Moussali Nouri was left with no choice than to cooperate.
She however asked the staff to also cooperate while she led the officials round the premises opening stores and cold rooms which they were able to evacuate as the melee was on, but the NAFDAC officials could not be deceived based on the information already in their possession.
In order to re-strategize, the NAFDAC officials took inventories of the expired products discovered inside the freezers, kitchen and some bars upstairs and urged them to signed, while every cold room in sight was sealed to prevent the management access for more evacuation.
Pretending to have concluded inspection, they asked Chocolat Royal management to report to NAFDAC office the next day and then stormed Mr Moussalli’s Karimu Kotun resident where the first two 40ft secret illegal cold rooms filled with fake, unregistered and expired food products built on top of sewage were discovered.
On getting to the apartment however, the foreign national security guards and other domestic staff, unleashed dogs on NAFDAC and refused to open the main gate leading to the building against all entreaties.
This however forced NAFDAC official to put a call across to the Director Investigation and Enforcement NAFDAC, Mr. Kingsley Ejiofor who immediately stormed the scene.
The arrival of this all action NAFDAC Director spurred everyone to action as he immediately ordered the officials to break the gate and shoot the dogs if the security guards eventually refused to chain them.
When finally the gate was forced opened and the guards subdued, the cooks voluntarily opened the two cold rooms where the entire products in stock were discovered to have expired, many since 2004 with maggots’ found in some .
At the end of evacuation, two buses and two Hilux pick-up vans filled with the fake and expired products worth over N500 million, all imported were evacuated from the Karimu Ikotun resident of Mr. Moussali alone.
On Interrogation, the jittery cooks who identified themselves as John Gbokasa and David from Benin Republic confirmed to NAFDAC officials that the House belongs to Mr Moussali and that the fake, unregistered and expired food products found inside the two cold rooms were for Chocolat Royal.
“I know that the products have expired, some, 2004, 2006, 2009, but I am a cook and I take instruction from my boss,” David said.
“Anytime they need some products to prepare edibles at Chocolat Royal, they come here with van and mine is to give them key to take whatever they want and after they finish taken the items, they will return the key to me,” John added.
They however begged the NAFDAC officials not to arrest them but wait until their boss, Mr Moussalli who absconded and is still at large or the wife who they said was out of the country return. NAFDAC however, turn down their plea and arrested the two who during interrogation at Apapa office of the Agency gave vital information to NAFDAC.
From there, the NAFDAC Director and the entire team stormed the Etim Iyang Crescent headquarters of Chocolat Royal at about 6:15pm for the second time with the aim to not only break the cold rooms but also arrest Tatiana and the staff who had earlier wilfully obstructed NAFDAC officials from performing their duty.
But except the overzealous Finance director, Mr Idowu Adebayo and one Mr David who were not all that lucky others including Tatiana have all taken to their heels on realizing that Moussalli’s resident has been broken into and two illegal cold rooms discovered and evacuated.
NAFDAC officials however, were able to inspected only two cold rooms as it was getting late already, except some few products purchased in our local market, all the imported products inside the cold rooms have expired.
The expired products which filled two Hilux pick-up vans worth about N500 million were also evacuated and the entire building sealed.
Reacting to the incident after the operation, Ejiofor said that NAFDAC had in their custody six persons in connection with the incident, adding that they were arrested for intentionally obstructing NAFDAC officials while on official duty.
“The suspects will be interrogated, while the food products will be sampled and taken to the laboratory for analysis, where the labels and contents will be properly analysed and at the end of the day when the reports are out, that will determine the next line of action,” Ejiofor said.
The NAFDAC director, who commended the officers and the entire team for the successful operation despite the intimidation from the staff of the offending company, further said that the food and confectionary outlet will continue to remain close to allow for proper investigation.
“They will be investigated by the Federal Taskforce on Fake and Counterfeit Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods, and at the end of investigation, files submitted will be reviewed and after evaluation, we would send them to our legal department and we will be advised on what to do by the legal and if we have enough facts, then we will now proceed for prosecution,” he added.
But a twisted press statement meant to obfuscate the truth as well as, deceive the members of the public, the management of Chocolat Royal, on Wednesday, presented the invasion of its premises by NAFDAC as a normal routine check, trivialising the incident as nothing serious.
Not only did they denied ever using the expired products discovered to prepare consumables for their customers but stated that the expired food products were discovered in their “cupboard”
Instead of admitting that it was the Chairman’s house located at Karimu Kotun, VI that was invaded and expired food products discovered in large quantity and evacuated, the statement said it was one of their directors’ resident.
“The items found were never used in preparing food or confectionaries.
“As corporate citizens, we will work with NAFDAC to ensure that these issues are promptly resolved and any breaches if any are remedied,” the statement reads in part.
Meanwhile the Director General of NAFDAC, Mr Paul Orhii who arrived Lagos from Abuja earlier Wednesday after inspecting the fake and expired food products evacuated from Chocolat Royal, Thursday morning at NAFDAC enforcement office Apapa, said that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and the people involved prosecuted if found culpable.
“As you can see, these products are not even registered, not only are they not registered, they have expired, some in 2004 and they are not even written in English language, so they could not have been registered.
“Not only that, you also noticed that the case is not only that the products have expired, some about 11 years ago, but they attempted to revalidate them, which is also a serious offence.
“They were caught in the process of using these expired products, so after investigation we will begin the prosecution. Anybody can build a cold room anywhere provided the place is not prohibited, but in this case, I understand that there was a cold room on top of sewage; suck away pit, of course you cannot use that kind of cold room to store stocks that you are going to use for the production of food for the members of the public, so that is an offence,” he said.
Ohii said that Chocolat Royal sealed outlet will remain close until investigation is concluded adding that compliance with NAFDAC regulation must be ensured first, before the issue of reopening of the outlet will be discussed, but not anytime soon.
He however thanked the journalist for his courage and the investigation which led to the operation urging the members of the public to provide NAFDAC with any useful information that could help them in their operation.
He noted that the Agency is making every effort to rid the Nigeria’s society of fake and substandard regulated products.
“We appreciate the role of the press in assisting us in our regulatory activities and we will ensure that all matters relating to fake and unregistered products are decisively dealt with and culprits brought to justice,” Orhii added.
Investigation carried out has shown that minimum of 5000 Nigerians and foreign nationals patronise the three Chocolat Royal outlets in 267A Etim Iyang Crescent, VI, Shoprite and Lekki. When calculated, It simply means that estimated 150,000 people are poisoned every month and 1.8million people every year.
In all it could be said that, Chocolat Royal has contributed to at least 10% of complicated health problems witnessed in Nigeria in the last 15 years based on the terrifying quantities of unregistered and expired food products discovered and evacuated in their cold rooms and stores.
A medical practitioner, Dr Bassey Richard who spoke to our correspondent on phone when asked to give insight on the health implication of consuming expired food products, said that consumption of fake and expired food products can cause food poisoning and very dangerous especially to pregnant women and infants.
“Eating expired food products will likely lead to food poisoning. Food poisoning consists of diarrhea and vomiting that can last for weeks, lead to fever and in some extreme cases to death.
“When it has to do with foods prepared with fruits such as nuts, apples and grapes, growth known as mycotoxins can occur, which can cause itchiness, diarrhea, vomiting and dizziness. It is not advisable to eat expired food products,” he said.

The Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday paraded seven suspected members of an armed robbery gang, two of whom confessed to have travelled from Italy and China to lead the gang in Lagos.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the gang members were arrested on Saturday, September 20, in the Ebute Meta, Lagos while they were preparing for an operation.
Our correspondent gathered that the suspects - Joel Eghon, Jude Dike, Ifeanyi Onwegbuchi, Solomon Igwe, Emmanuel Ifeanyi, Ejike Emegwo and Leonard Afoaku - were apprehended with a Toyota Hiace which they had earlier snatched along the Ibadan-Ife Expressway.
According to the police, the bus contained Volkswagen engines, female bags, shoes and motor gear oil, which had been recovered.
Speaking with PUNCH Metro, the Italian returnee, 55-year-old Dike, said he had spent eight years in Italy trying to make ends meet, but returned to Nigeria about three years ago to join the gang.
Dike, who hails from Orlu, Imo State, said he supervised the sale of all the goods stolen by the gang.
Grey-haired Dike said, "I have my stores on Ashogbon Street, Isale Eko, Idumota in Lagos. Before coming to Lagos, I was in Italy for eight years. I was doing drugs runs for many dealers. I came back to Lagos three years ago, where I met Emegwo. We were staying together in Idumota. He was the one who introduced me to the gang.
"When they go on operations, they drop the goods they snatch in my store. I sell them for the gang and share the money out after removing my own gains. When some cosmetics were stolen, my gain was N800,000. On another occasion, my gain was N600,000."
Dike added that he had been with the gang for about three years.
"At a point, I told them I wanted to quit because I knew I was treading a wrong path, but they threatened to implicate me and I continued," he added.
For 31-year-old Emegwo, he was working as keeper of a warehouse in Beijing, China and had to leave the country due to poor payment.
He said, "I returned to Nigeria in August 2013. I was working in Beijing, China, in a warehouse. China was not easy. I was not well paid. I came back because my papers were about to expire and I did not want immigration problems.
"I followed them for this particular operation because my wife needed money. She is carrying a still born and we need to pay for an operation. Unfortunately, we had not sold the goods before we were arrested."
The police revealed that the mode of operation of the gang was to pose as security officials on the highway and flag down targeted drivers for "stop-and-search". In the process, the suspected robbers would attack their victims.
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Cornelius Aderanti, said nine rounds of 9mm ammunition, three locally-made pistols and 33 live cartridges were recovered from the gang. He added that the police would continue to fight crimes in the state.

He said, "When I got information about the activities of this gang, I instructed the Special Anti-Robbery Squad team, led by Abba Kyari, to go after the suspects. They have all confessed to several robberies in Lagos, Osun and Oyo states.
"The police in Lagos are going to continue to hunt down criminals and protect lives and property. The suspects will be made to face the full wrath of the law."

…Rejects $66,500 bribe offer
By SAMUEL OYADONGHA, Yenagia
Operatives of the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta code named Operation Pulo Shield have arrested two Britons and 12 Nigerian technicians over their alleged involvement in illegal bunkering along the Chanomi Creek in the western delta.
The suspects were said to have   offered the operatives of the JTF  the sum of $66,500, to create safe passage for them to siphon crude oil into their barges from a Shell Petroleum Development Company pipeline along the Chanomi creek in Delta State.   But the offer was rejected.

The two Britons identified are Messrs Piers Eastwood and Vincent Haywood attached to a United Kingdom based maritime security firm with regional branch in Lagos, according to the JTF, were to provide security/consultancy to MT Crete, a vessel believed to have positioned at Brass open waters for supposed illegal bunkering.
Trouble, it was learnt, started for the suspects when on March 17, a representative of a firm (name withheld) approached the JTF   Headquarters, with an approval letter from the Nigerian Navy Ship Delta and an authorization from the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC through the Naval Headquarters.
The approval, Saturday Vanguard learnt, was to evacuate products from an arrested vessel under the custody of the NN at NNS DELTA between 12 March -14 April 2014.
The Joint Task Force approval was reportedly issued and immediately, the headquarters directed Sector 1 of the special security outfit to monitor their activities in the waterways.
Speaking to newsmen yesterday  at the headquarters of the JTF in Yenagoa where the suspects were paraded, the commander of the outfit, Major General Emmanuel Atewe who was represented by the Media  Coordinator, JMCC Col Onyema   Nwachukwu said they were arrested by operatives of the task force as part of ongoing effort to combat the menace of crude oil theft and other sundry crimes in the region.
According to him, “the Operations officer of 3 Battalion discovered through their confession that their intention was to hack into one of SPDC pipelines in Chanomi creek, Warri Delta State and siphon crude oil.
”They gave him as an initial payment, a bribe of $5,000 for recharge card and $1500 to fuel a gunboat that will escort the stolen crude oil.”
According to him, they requested the Operations Officer of 3 Battalion to facilitate a meeting with the Commander 4 Brigade, Brig Gen Fidelis Azinta.
Continuing he said, “the meeting was convened as a bait on March 20, 2014 at the Brigade Commander’s office. During the meeting, the suspects expressed their desire to connect a hose to SPDC pipeline along the Chanomi creek in Delta State so as to illegally siphon crude oil into barges.
”While in the Brigade Commander’s office, they promised to bribe the Brigade’s Commander, with the sum of N20m as well as take care of the officers and soldiers along the Chanomi creek.
”On 21 March   2014, one of the suspects brought to the Brigade Commander $60,000 which translates to N10m being 50 per cent of the N20m promised. The suspects were immediately arrested for attempting to bribe the Brigade Commander for economic sabotage.
”Twelve technicians who were to connect the hoses to facilitate the theft and their implements were also arrested.”
He added that a follow up operation subsequently led to the arrest of two Britons, who were in company of seven Nigeria policemen led by an inspector.
The two Britons, according to the JTF commander were security consultants from a United Kingdom- based port maritime security firm with regional branch in Lagos.
”The two flew into Lagos on 20 March and left for Port Harcourt same day where they met with a Nigerian (one Bello) who was supposed to be their point of contact. The two Britons were to provide security escort/consultancy to MT Crete, a vessel believed to have been positioned at Brass open waters for suspected illegal oil bunkering”.
Gen Awete revealed that all the suspects and exhibits were transferred to JTF headquarters on March 23 for further investigation adding that a joint investigation team was immediately constituted to carry out a preliminary investigation where all the suspects and witnesses were invited and also examined the exhibits, documents and equipment recovered.
This include, the sixty thousand dollars offered to Brig Gen Azinta, the six thousand five hundred dollars offered to Capt M Abdullahi which were displayed to newsmen.
The suspects were later handed over to the Department of State Security for prosecution.

'HOUSE OF HORROR' IN IBADAN

Nigeria: Police probe Ibadan 'house of horror'

Nigerian police have opened a murder investigation after human skeletons and body parts were discovered in an abandoned building in the south-west.
Officers also rescued several people nearby who had been chained together and appeared severely malnourished.
MapThe alarm had been raised by motorcycle taxi riders in the city of Ibadan after some of their colleagues went missing.
Several people have been arrested in the city - Nigeria's third largest - a police spokeswoman said.
Living skeletons
When police searched the abandoned building - dubbed the "house of horror" by the media - they found skeletons, decomposing bodies, skulls and bones on bloodstained floors.
A number of people were found shackled in leg-irons inside the building.
"Some seven malnourished human beings looking like living skeletons were also rescued in the bushes surrounding the building," police spokeswoman Olabisi Ilobanafor told AFP.
She said the motorbike riders had stumbled on the bodies after complaining to police about the disappearance of colleagues in suspicious circumstances.
"It is not a common occurrence in Ibadan or in the (Oyo) state. The police will investigate this crime in all its ramifications," she said.
Observers say some victims of kidnapping are often tortured or used as sacrifices in black magic rituals.

“The Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Superintendent of Police Abba Kyari, got a tip-off about the operations of the syndicate some weeks ago and mounted surveillance at Jacob’s Alagbado residence. It was Jacob’s confessional statement after his arrest that led to the arrest of Ayodabo who is the leader of the syndicate.“This case will eventually be handed over to operatives of Interpol because of the negative implications the fake currencies outflow might have had on the economies of the West African countries.”
The CP stated that the cutting machine was owned by Ayodabo and procured from the Republic of BeninOne of the suspects, Ibe said, “I often come down to Oluwole Street in Lagos Island. That is where Ayodabo has his shop. I would spend N5,000 to get currency worth N100,000. I usually buy currency worth between N500,000 and N700,000.”

Nigerian gets 20 years for sex slavery

Published: Oct. 29, 2012 at 10:10 PM

CANTERBURY, England, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- A court in southeastern England has sentenced a Nigerian immigrant to 20 years in prison for trafficking teenage African immigrant girls into prostitution.

The court in Canterbury sentenced 42-year-old Osezua Osolase after his conviction on seven counts of trafficking young girls, rape and sexual activity with a child, the regional Kent Online report said.

Three unidentified Nigerian girls ages 14, 16 and 17 testified they were lured to Britain via Italy and Spain with a promise of education, but instead were forced to work in the sex trade, the report said.

Court heard Osolase told the girls he had magical powers and had cast a spell on them.
In sentencing Monday, Judge Adele Williams called Osolase "a very, very dishonest man, arrogant and manipulative, devoid of conscience, and devoid of any compassion for your victims."

Prosecutors also recommended deportation at the end of his sentence. He was deported once before in 2007 but married a German woman in Nigeria and was permitted to return to England.
After his conviction Friday, prosecutors began proceedings to seize all of his assets, the report sai

Cult clash: One killed in Enugu

Cult clash: One killed in Enugu
From PETRUS OBI, Enugu

At least one person was confirmed dead in a fresh clash between two rival cult groups last weekend in the Abakpa Nike area of the Enugu State capital.
Police identified the victim as Emmanuel Obiekwe.
The Enugu Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the renewed cult war in the coal city, also disclosed that nine persons had already been arrested, adding that investigations were still on to unravel the cause of the trouble and identities of those involved.

He said: “The deceased was found in the Abakpa area of the capital and nine persons have been arrested; we don’t know yet if the deceased is a student but we suspect conflict between cult groups.
“Investigation is on and we would soon be in a better position to know what actually happened.”
There was already fear among residents of Ugbene 11 area of Abakpa where a good number of cultists were reported to have paraded the area at the weekend harassing and robbing their victims.
The latest clash, which was believed to be between the Black Axe, popularly known as ‘Ayes’, and ‘Bargas’ came less than two months after several people were murdered in a similar clash that contributed to the ban on the use of motorcycles popularly known as Okada in Enugu.

The proscription of Okada, which had received mixed feelings from different groups, was sequel to a law promulgated by the state House of Assembly.
Before the recent clash, the level of crime was believed to have reduced considerably as a result of the ban on Okada.

Sex Exports from Benin to Mali

Sex Exports from Benin to Mali

In what appears like a recurrent cycle of shame, the men of Nigeria Immigration Services have foiled an attempt to export five Edo girls into slavery. The five teenagers and one boy were intercepted with a suspected human trafficker, simply identified as Stella Daniel, from Cross River State at Seme border as they were trying to enter neighbouring Republic of Benin enroute war-torn Republic of Mali.
The girls, Blessing, Abigael , Ella Ojo, Faith and Isabella and Lucky, the only boy, (other names withheld) had quietly absconded with Daniel to chase the proverbial Golden Fleece in Mali. They all claimed ignorance of the civil war in the country of their destination. For them, the attraction to work in a bar abroad was too tempting to ignore.
The promise of N30,000CFA, equivalent of N10,000 monthly, was more than enough consideration to ‘escape’ from the allure of love and care of their parents. They confessed to have sworn to on oath with their madam not to run away until they have fully refunded her through services to customers. However, the alertness of the eagle eyes men of Nigeria Immigration Service at the border post saved them from what appears like exportation into sex slavery in foreign land.
According to the Comproller of Immigration Services (CIS) at the border, Julius Ogbu, who explained the circumstances of the arrest of the girls and their madam to Crimewatch, the appearance of a woman and young girls of college age almost in the same age bracket aroused the suspicion of the officers. The suspicion of the officers was confirmed, when, upon interrogation, none of them had any traveling document while their destination also raised more curiosity.
“They said that were going to work in a restaurant for the trafficker. She said she recruited them from Nigeria. Incidentally, neither the trafficker nor any of the girls had traveling documents.“More curious was the fact that none of their parents was aware they were traveling outside the country. That was why we had to detain them and conducted further interrogation. By the time we put our facts together, we came to a conclusion that it was actually a case of human trafficking. Number one, no traveling document; number two, their parents and relatives were not aware that they were leaving the shore of this country.
“And their age is between 18 and 20. Only one of them is 22. That is the age they gave us in our records. They all claimed they were from Edo State. “By virtue of our training: you are trained to be a border patrol officer and patrol prepares you for jobs in mega routes while control officers are those you see in the main borders. You’re also trained to be very vigilant so that any movement that is suspicious, you apprehend, and interrogate and then you refer.
“At the end of the day, you come into a conclusion. So, on this night when they came out of the bus, it aroused the suspicion of our men. The driver and the bus are still being detained because we have not been able to ascertain if they are culpable or not. We want to know if they boarded the vehicle as just routing passengers or not. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP), the agency responsible for cases of human trafficking will be able to give their verdict along that line after we have handed them over to them.
“We always warn the transporters to be careful of strange movements. If you have five young girls, traveling with a woman and you could easily infer they are not her children, then you should be suspicious. Ours is to apprehend and hand the suspects to NAPTIP. By the time they conclude their investigation they will assist those girls to re-unite with their families while the trafficker will face prosecution,” he said.
While our reporter was still at the border with the officers, mother of one of the girls, Mrs Oforue Imagbosoria, came in tears all the way Edo from Benin State, in search of her daughter, who she claimed had disappeared since penultimate Sunday. She said her daughter called her on GSM and apologised for her conduct.
Her words: “My daughter just called me yesterday and informed me that she had been arrested. She just called me and said, ‘Mummy, I beg you to forgive me; they don catch me for road.’ I asked her, where you dey go my pikin? She said she dey Lagos. She said it was a woman from Cross River State that carried her to swear juju because she wanted to carry her travel abroad.
She explained that her daughter disclosed that she and her friends were at Seme border. “So, that was how I came from Benin,” she stressed. According to her, Abigael’s action was very strange because she had been well catered for by her parents.
“We made sure she does not lack anything. She said it was her friends that introduced her to the woman,” she said.
The alleged trafficker in a chat with our reporter, however, insisted that the decision to take the girls to the foreign country was motivated by compassion and pity. “Although I needed one girl and one boy to work in my restaurant and bar in Mali, I decided to take others along out of pity and from what they told me,” she said.
Madam Daniel, who claimed to have spent three and half years in Mali where she has a boyfriend, who she has a daughter for, said she planned to accommodate the girls in her apartment and that she promised to pay them N10,000 each every months as remuneration.
She confessed that she did not obtain any document to facilitate their traveling since the route is familiar to her. “I myself, I don’t have any paper because I do not know that I need to collect papers to travel,” she said.
She spoke on how she recruited the girls: “When I came for Easter, I told them where I was staying in Benin that I needed one boy and one girl to take along with me when I’m returning to Mali. My plan was that the boy would be operating the bar while the girl would take care of the restaurant.
So, they brought a girl and a boy to me.
“However, others started coming and said they must follow me. One of them said she was an orphan, two others joined us and started crying that they had nobody to support them. I told them, I didn’t have enough money but they were crying. So, I decided to help them. This one (pointing to one of the girls) came on Sunday morning, the day we wanted to leave Benin. She was crying.
She said she must follow us. I told her that I didn’t have enough money to take us to Mali but if we get to Cotonou, I could make phone call so that they would send money to us. I asked her to go and bring her parents because I could not take anybody away without the consent of her parents, who must also stand as surety. The one that said she didn’t have parents, I asked her to bring her sisters or any close relation.
“Now, in the morning we found this one (Abigael) waiting outside, crying that she must follow us. When I asked her to go and bring her parents, she said no. That was how they started crying. They said that life is tough for them because they don’t have any care from their parents.
It was the way they explained their plight to me that made me to accept them.”
